Safe to use weed controls

Can you please read the below email to possibly help me out here? I live in Nazareth, Pa., Zone 6. Thanks!

For veggie planting, like tomatoes, brussel sprouts, eggplants, etc. planted in large pots, I was just told by a “PREEN REP” that “Preen is not intended for use in (any) pot, small or large for weed control” and that “it is only for ground dirt and would affect the growth of my veggies if used in any pot.”

I’m in a dilemma here with what to do to prevent weeds in all of my pots. Is there anything on the market that can be used safely on/in my pot soil that will not only control weeds but will NOT interfere with the growth of my plants like Preen would?

Are there any “homemade” mixtures that will do the same, as to not only prevent weeds but will NOT interfere with the growth of my plants?

Thanks so much for taking the time to address my questions! Have a great day!

Thomas

You could use a layer of well-worn organic mulch (at least two inches thick) to discourage new weed growth. There is also weed or landscape fabric you can buy to do the same job. You may still get some weeds, but they won’t be as many. The best way to control weeds (if you don’t have a lot of plants) still is to make sure you use fresh (weed-free) potting soil every season and to pick the weeds out of the pots by hand.
