Rows or Flat

Where I grew up in the South, we always made rows for our garden. Now, I live in Michigan, and nobody makes rows – their garden spaces are perfectly flat. What is the difference, and which is better? I was always told we needed the rows for proper irrigation and drainage.

In more rural areas, planting in rows was easier as far as maintenance, watering, etc. since most plantations in the South were quite large. Limited space and more urban areas have little need for the traditional rows you are accustomed to seeing. That being said, the layout and planting of your vegetable garden is based more on personal preference and what works best for you rather than any specific order or design. However, planting crops in a way in which all are supplied with ample amounts of sunlight is best–such as with taller plants in rows further back to prevent shading.
