Rotting Squash

My squash plants (I have 4 that are in two separate containers) appear healthy except that the squash grow to about an inch or two and then start to rot before they fully form. It begins at the end not attached to the plant. I live in east Tennessee and it has been extremely hot and humid. What am I doing wrong? (The same thing happened last year)
