Q.Roses Growing From Beneath Soil

Zone East of ireland | Anonymous added on March 13, 2025 | Answered

Garden designer dug up (or did he?) 5 rose bushes – my history with roses not good. They have all grown back from beneath the ground 1 from beneath gravel and have flowered, some better than others for 7 years . Most are not a thing of beauty and very very thorny. Are these all suckers? I’ll probably dig most up if they are .

It sounds like the roses were probably grafted and what grew back was the rootstock of the rose, not the desirable upper part. Replacing them would be your best bet.
