can i just dig a hole in the grass and pop in a rose bush? or do i need a neat and tidy bed”?

I want a natural look… not all fussy.

I would recommend creating a mulched barrier around the rosebush location that is a 24 to 30 inch diameter circle, the rosebush being the center of it. Kind of like a castle with surrounding moat. The grass roots will compete with the feeder roots for the rose and will not allow it to get established properly. Thus the rose will not perform well and could die an early death.
