Gardening Know How Questions & Answers - https://questions.gardeningknowhow.comSummer 2014 I planted three rose bushes, following all the instructions. That first year I seem to recall that they flowered OK, but not a lot, as I assumed they were new. Last year they produced lots of buds, but the buds turned brown and never flowered. I pruned the roses well and this year they are large, strong and again producing plenty of large buds. But, same again, the beautiful promising large buds just turn brown – they look ‘crispy’, as though they are dead and dried, but in fact they are ‘wet’ inside. The stem below the bud has also turned brown – though the bushes are lovely and green. I live in Cardiff, so we have seen plenty of rain – but other gardens I pass all have lovely blooming roses. Any help anyone can offer I would be very grateful (the bushes were planted in memory of my mum so I will do anything I can to help them bloom.)
Many thanks, lesley

Hi Lesley, so sorry to hear this is happening to your rosebushes blooms…. If you had not mentioned that you get plenty of rain, I would have thought you might have a thrips problem. However, instead I do believe you are seeing a classic case of Rose Balling.
