Hi. I recently bought a new rose bush and the leaves are already turning yellow. It’s possible that I over watered it since I was trying to ensure that it would survive. But it’s also possible that it was heat stressed since we had some extreme spring temperatures immediately after planting. But what puzzles me, and I think it’s possibly an additional clue, is that the blooms went from a very fragrant deep burgundy color to a very pale, barely smelling pink. Also, the blooms barely last for a single day. What can I do to restore my mother’s memorial rose? Please help.

If you have not transplanted the rosebush from the pot it came in to a garden or rose bed, you need to do so ASAP. It sounds like the rose may have outgrown the pot and the root system is stressed. Problems below ground become problems above ground. Once planted in the garden, water the rosebush with a mix of a product called super thrive and a root stimulator added to the same water. Do this the next 4 to 5 times the bush needs watering. When planting the rosebush in the garden, check the root system as it comes out of the pot. If the root system is tightly in the shape of the pot, you will need to pull the roots apart a bit to get them out of that strangle hold shape. Some leaves turning yellow and falling off along with the pale blooms are signs of a root system that is stressed out and needs help.
