Rose of Sharon crossing branches.

I have two large branches on a Rose of Sharon tree that are rubbing. Since both branches are long and about as big around as my thumb, I would like to separate them. I want to train them to grow apart. What can I use as a spacer to keep the branches apart until they learn to grow separately. Staking one with a rope is not an option.

A small piece of wood makes a good spacer. You could also tie each of those branches to other branches that would pull them apart. If you do choose this option, make sure to use rubber plant tie material to avoid harming the shrub.

Sometimes it is necessary to prune so that it can reshape its self after the pruning.
