Maybe you are thinking of the Sassafras root? This can be common in the southern states, and can also be made into a tea.
Hopefully this article will help: https://www.gardeningknowhow.com/ornamental/trees/sassafras/what-is-a-sassafras-tree.htm
My only other thought would be Ginseng root: https://www.gardeningknowhow.com/edible/herbs/ginseng/ginseng-growing-and-harvesting.htm
