Overnight my beautiful Romaine lettuce has developed a brownish/black crust right in middle/top of the head. Is it a pest, a disease, or what?

It is likely the result of a pest or fungus of some kind. We have found neem oil to be very effective against almost all harmful pests and fungal problems in the garden. This article has more information:
