Roadside Garden

I live in town next to a fairly busy road. At peak times probably an hour or so a day, there is a lot of start/stop traffic. I was hoping to grow some vegetables there, but am concerned about pollutants from exhaust fumes. I am only a meter from the road. What, if any, could I plant there? Would carrots be ok?

Root vegetables would be your best bet in a place like that, so carrots will be ok. The soil will shield the root vegetables from the exhaust. You may also want to look at making hoop houses over the plants to help keep some of the exhaust away.
