Q.Reuse Dirt?

Zone 60659 | Anonymous added on August 22, 2022 | Answered

Is it okay to reuse soil that was used this summer for next year’s 2022 garden? Our Rosemont Balcony Garden (RBG) is a third floor, south-facing space where among other plants, the sungold cherry tomatoes are doing fine. Yesterday’s third harvest yielded 102 of those golden beauties. Since all of our plants grow in containers, I want to get the most from my efforts. So here’s my question: Is it advisable to reuse dirt/potting soil?

The soil could be depleted of nutrients. If you rotate what you plant, it's possible to choose plants that replenish the soil. Or, you could add nutrients back in manually with a tomato fertilizer. Another option, enhance the existing soil with new compost.
