repotting tree philodendren

When repotting bipennifolium, does the soil level need to be the same? I am rescuing one, as a house plant, from a friend. Many lower leaves have died off, leaving ten inches of bare plant stem. I thought it would look better if the bare 2″ diameter “trunk” were buried but don’t know if it would root or rot. ??

You can go a little above this, but do not go more than a couple of inches. It needs to be pretty close to the original soil line. This article will give you more information on their care: https://www.gardeningknowhow.com/houseplants/philodendron/fiddleleaf-philodendron-care.htm [1]
