Repotting an Orchid

Repotting an orchid. The instructions on the potting medium said to trim off dead roots and cut remaining roots to 6″ inches long. That seems too drastic to me. Is that correct? Should I trim the roots that are growing in the air around the plant? Are these roots supposed to be under the medium? It is a beautiful plant and has bloomed 3 times in 3 years. I don’t want to do anything to hurt it. Thanks.

We recommend trimming away any dead roots, but not root pruning as you mention above.
