Replace Died Conifer Tree

We would like to take out conifer tree but not sure which tree or shrub to replace it with its at a back garden fence so would like something tall

As long as you don't replace it with any of its relatives then you will be safe. You did not specify, exactly, which conifer so I would recommend a deciduous tree, instead, to avoid future problems.
