Removing Irises Completely Without Digging

Question

I have irises around an outside light pole, so I am afraid to dig in the soil around it to remove the irises, bulbs, and rhizomes. Is there a way to kill them without digging up the bulbs and rhizomes?

Killing them can be done with Vinegar, or, my favorite- Boiling Water!!!
