removing a stump

I have a stump that is in the middle of a very old lilac bush. We have cut this tree down but, of course, it sprouts back up every year. I am afraid to use any chemicals for fear it will kill this lilac bush. Any ideas for a natural approach for destroying this nusince without damaging the lilac bush?

If you can get to it to drill holes in it, this will help it along faster. Filling the holes with a fertilizer can also speed it along.

For the suckers that grow up from the stump, when you cut them off, paint the cut with Roundup. This will help with killing the stump without harming the lilac.
