Are they in the same family of plants, or what is the difference?

There are differences with the two fruits. Raspberries, when picked, will have a “rasp”, or hollow center at the top where it came off the stem. Blackberries do not have this. They are clean and flat along the top, not hollow. Raspberries are more oblong in shape whereas blackberries are more round. Also, raspberry canes are shorter than those of blackberries and will be paler green and fuzzy, rather than thorny like blackberries.
