Reduce mature plant size

Question

My grasses have gotten big around and I want to reduce their size. I tried cutting a section out but roots seem impossible to cut.
How can I reduce their area?

Here are tips to cut ornamental grasses. You must dig them up, then cut with a root saw or chainsaw if they are large.
