Redbud Tree Roots Exposed

Question

I just piled a bunch of top soil on the roots around my Redbud tree because the roots are exposed. Then on top of that, I added mulch. Did I do the right thing?

Were these new roots growing out or old, surface roots? The old surface roots don't need to be covered unless they are a trip hazard. If those are new roots coming out, it is wise that you covered them.
