Red Maple Tree

The top branches of our red maple are dying. They have lichens on them. The lower portion of the tree is sprouting out all kinds of new branches. What could be happening? Lack of water?

It is definitely stressed, as lichen normally only hangs out on stressed plantings. Tree suckering at or around the base is another sign of stress. It is difficult to say what exactly could be the stressor – may be a lack of water, could be insect pests or even disease. It might be a good idea to call an arborist or contact your local extension office for advice. Someone that can come out and look at the trees could be of more help.
