If I prune as late in the winter as possible, there will still surely be a frost in March (early spring here in Virginia) so I am not clear on when I can winter prune. The tree is around 9 years old and has way too many vertical growing branches. It seems to be a healthy tree but I don’t get many cherries, probably because of the density of branches. Thanks so much for your advice.

Another resource said to prune from February to late March in your area. Thinning is the recommended practice for mature trees. Here is more:
