Do I need to put a liner in my raised garden bed, or is it ok to just put dirt in the boxes?

Unless you are using treated wood for your raised beds (in which case lining with plastic is helpful to repel chemicals), there is no reason why you should have to line them. Simply filling the beds with dirt is adequate.
