Q.pygmy date palm lifespan?

Zone florida | bo added on December 1, 2014 | Answered

I have 2 pair of pygmy date palms and they are at least 12 years old. They are located inside a swimming pool screen room/enclosure and are starting to reach the top of the screen ceiling. I understand they only get about 10 feet in height, so what happens when they stop growing? Will they die?

You ask a couple of good questions, to which I don't have personal experience answers, nor could I find much information. I did find a couple of anecdotes concerning roebellini over 30 years old. I also found that they can, at times, grow to be 15'. I feel that your concern is that they might get too large for your space, and I do have a suggestion. Tall and mature PDP's cost several hundred dollars - with a few phone calls or messages you should be able to locate a landscaper who would be glad to come dig them up from your space, plant some new smaller ones or different plants if you choose, and pay you into the bargain. In the meantime, this article might add something to your knowledge. https://www.gardeningknowhow.com/houseplants/pygmy-palm/grow-pygmy-palm-trees.htm
