Pruning/Trimming Rubber Plant

My rubber plant has dropped leaves over several years and now I have spindly stalks. I have a lot of healthy growth of the tops with new growth, but the bottoms are bare. Can I trim back and will they grow back? Most of the branches are 2-3 feet from the bottom without leaves, with 10-20 leaves on the top. This makes my plant sad looking. I would appreciate your help. I would like to save this plant, as it was given to me 7 years ago when my father passed away.
