Gardening Know How Questions & Answers - https://questions.gardeningknowhow.comWe were told these are called strawberry hydrangeas because the white blooms turn a pretty light strawberry pink. The stems are long, woody and coming straight up out of the root. I have not removed the spent blooms since I am not familiar with hydrangeas and have in the past cut them back so much that they normally die. These do seem to be a more hardy shrub. I am at a loss at what to do. Help. Thank you.

I believe your plant is related to the PeeGee family. Here's our article about pruning different types of hydrangeas: https://www.gardeningknowhow.com/ornamental/shrubs/hydrangea/prune-hydrangea-bushes-hydrangea-pruning-instructions.htm [2]
