Pruning hydrangeas

Question

I have 2 potted hydrangeas. The old flowers have died and new flowers are going below the old stem. Should I cut the old stem?,and if should cut the old stem, exactly where should I make the cut?

Just remove the spent flower at this point in the growing season.
