Pruning hydrangea

I would be grateful if you could advise when and how I should prune my hydrangea. There appears to be a lot of advice but depends on the type of hydrangeas.

My hydrangeas have new and old wood. On some of the new wood, there appears to be new shoots. What should I remove and what should I leave, and when should it be done?

You can dead head and trim up all Hydrangeas when needed.
Remove any damaged or dean branches as needed.

Pruning recommendations are different for each variety.

If you really are unsure of the type of Hydrangea you have, and the bush needs to be cleaned up and size reduced, trim no more than 1/3 of the plant in one cutting. Do this after blooms have faded.
