Heavy pruning should take plant in the spring.
Pruning between Feb and March helps promote new growth and flowering.
This will also help the plant keep a nice shape and not become unkempt.
Do not do heavy pruning in fall or winter.
Remove any dead or diseased material any time of the year.
If you really must remove any plant material that is simply to leggy, keep it to a minimum.
