Pruning forsythia bushes

Is pruning forsythia acceptable in mid to late June .?. The bushes are now about 6 feet tall ! I would like to cut them down to about three to four feet tall ,

I have actually pruned forsythia in June w/o problems but it can open the plant up to pests and disease.
