Pruning fig trees

Question

I have two fig trees. One is about three to four feet high and the other one started coming back from the roots of one that I planted two years ago and is about one to two feet high. I would like to know if I should prune both trees or just the larger one. I also would like to know the best method of protecting them from the north winds that are bound to be heading our direction within the next month or so.

The tree that is coming back from the roots may not be any good. Figs are usually grafted, that is a nicely fruiting variety, called the scion, is grafted onto the roots of a variety that may not have good fruit, but is more hardy. If cold or some other problem kills the scion, the root stock can send up shoots, but they probably won’t be good fruit. Just so you know.
