Pruning Crape Myrtles

We have two crape myrtles in our front yard that are at least 15 feet tall, but they look leggy and scruffy. We have never pruned them before but I don’t know if we can wait until late winter/early spring. We live in Cola, SC and have average temps of 94 in August. We have had a lot of rain this summer. When is the earliest that we can prune? What can we do to get a good shape going?
