Pruning Camellias

Have 3 camellias that are about 60 yrs. old. It’s time to prune. Once you get past the outer foliage (just about a foot or a little more), the shrubs are empty and woody. Do I need to cut way back and open them up a little, or trim up the leafy parts? I’m sort of new to this. Thank you.

I would only prune it back by 1/3. You can follow up next year with a pruning of 1/3 again. Any more than 1/3 and most plants start to have problems.
