Q.Pruning A Large Old Christmas Cactus

Zone Kelowna, BC ,canada | 2rbrown added on June 3, 2024 | Answered

I have a 12 year old CC it is very healthy and blooms from Nov to June every year. It has this large browny green stem that sticks out at an odd angle and makes the plant look wired. Can I cut this stem off without hurting the plant.? Thank you Richard

Yes, these old stalks can root, as well. Though it will be best to cut everything in segments.

You can prune these pretty hard with no issues! To be on the safe side, I would not take off more than 1/3 of the plant. You can root the cuttings from it, as well!

I know about propagating the cuttings but was not sure about the thick stocks, are you saying that these will grow roots as well and I can propagate the whole stem?
