Pruning a Gardenia Plant

I have a gardenia plant I bought around Mother’s Day. It is growing nicely. I have transplanted it from the plastic pot it came in to a nice crock. It has produced 2 flowers but has become asymmetrial. I was wondering if it can be pruned or should it be pruned? Do I just cut off the longer stems even thoogh they are new growth and very healthy?
