Pruning a Gardenia Bush

My gardenia bush is really old and I was wondering just how far back I can cut branches without damaging the bush. Would it be all right to cut down to just above the graft? Or is that too far down? Also, should I remove the ‘suckers’ that are down at the bottom of the bush? I really love my bush, as it has lots of blooms and they really smell good. I don’t want to kill the bush. Hope you can help.
