Pruning a fig tree

We bought a young fig tree for a container…south facing against the house. My HUSBAND’S choice was one long, four foot main stem . The side buds are smooth and do not look as if branches will ever come off of them. Now, the top of the tree has about 6 huge, lovely new leaves and a very small little branch, four inches from the soil. Husband wants to trim it down in the autumn. All the new top growth gone, half the height of the one main branch. Will those side buds step up to the plate and grow out? Those side buds are not doing a thing….smooth to the tall stem. What should we do?
