pruning a fig tree

I have a fig tree that has just taken off this summer and getting to large and would like to prune it now. If I do prune now will it damage beyond repair and if so can I atleast prune partially so I have some room in this area? And than go back in winter when dormant and finish the pruning.

Thank you for any advice.

Pruning a fig now can damage your fig tree in two ways: it stimulates the tree to produce new growth just before winter, which will use up stored energy the tree needs for spring growth, and the new growth can be damaged by frost, which could weaken the tree and allow diseases in. It is really best to wait until winter to do the pruning.
