Pruning a Chinese Ming Tree

I have a Chinese Ming tree that is too tall, and has outgrown its pot. My husband has recommended I cut off the top (about one foot) and re-plant it in a larger pot. I keep it outdoors in the summer and bring it in during the cold winter. Will I kill the tree by cutting off the top? Thank you, and regards June Kiger
