Pruning Christmas cactus

This Christmas cactus was grown for 50 + yrs. in Wisconsin. Last year I moved to Fl. It survived the trip but I think the summer heat wasn’t the best for it. Friends watered it while I went back to Wisconsin and it had many brown, spent stems and required a lot of trimming. Long story short, the plant is 17″ high, the top leaves or stems are looking like they’re dehydrated. Just now I was going to prune it and noticed one bud on it. My Question: will it be harmful to prune it with the one bud, or can I at least prune stems from the other side of the plant? Then which would be the smarter way to form roots can I put them in a bit of water to root before planting them?

Generally you would prune just after your plant is done blooming. In the case of your plant with one bud, it will do no harm to prune now.
