I have a maple tree, probably 40 yrs. + old and 40' high. I would like to cut off some low branches. Is this ok to do, or will it kill the tree?

Yes, you can remove low-hanging branches on a maple tree. It's best to not prune the upper branches on a mature tree, but removing the low branches is fine. Here is more about how to do it:
