Propagation of Orchids

Question

I have a lovely orchid and I was wondering how I might propagate it. I have previously propagated streptocarpus by taking a leaf, cutting it into segments, dipping them in hormone rooting powder and planting them. Would this work with orchids? When I have looked online before, websites have talked confusingly about propagating from roots, but how would I do this?
