Q.Propagation Of Chaenomeles By Cuttings

My cuttings of Chaenomeles seem to dry out and do nothing. I’ve taken soft cuttings, removed leaves on bottom, dipped in rooting hormone, planted in spaghnum moss and perlite. They are in a greenhouse and kept moist. They always seem to die on top and, even after months, there are n roots beginning. This has been my second attempt.

The article below says to take a cutting from last year's growth, so make sure you are getting wood that is not new growth from this year. It won't be a soft cutting. If you have a warming mat, it will help. This article explains:
