Propagating Hydrangeas

Good day… I have found lots of information about Propagating Hydrangea, but nothing on what to do with it, once it takes root. I live in Zone 5, and winter will be upon us before know it. It is Aug. 16th. Today I set several clippings out to hopefully take root. I suspect in 5-8 weeks they will be ready. Then what?? I literally do not know what to do with these young tender plants from that moment on.

Thank you in advance for any information.

Hello,

Thank you for sending us your gardening question. Once your cuttings have taken root, in the Fall, you can take a cutting and plant it directly outdoors. Hydrangeas usually need 6 weeks of temperatures below 65 degrees to set buds, followed by at least 6 more weeks of night time temperatures of 35 to 45 degrees. Eighty or so days after this, they flower. Expect them to take a year or two after you transplant them outdoors before they flower.
