Pomegranate

I have a small pomegranate tree with many fruits on it, but they are only golf ball size. Is my tree a different type from the large ones? I live in the Florida Keys.

There are older varieties of pomegranate that produce smaller fruit, so you may have one of those. However, some gardeners report that thinning their pomegranate fruits helps each fruit grow larger.

To thin, wait until the fruits start growing so that you know which ones have been pollinated. Then remove the smaller fruits in each cluster (at the end of a branch), leaving only the largest one or two fruits.

Another possibility is that your tree is just very young. As your tree gets larger, it may have better fruit production.

Also, make sure your tree receives adequate water during fruit production, and that it’s not deficient in nutrients, since low water or nutrients could inhibit healthy fruit growth.
