Plum tree problem

Tree is approx. 26 yrs old. The branches have small bb-like infestation. The smell is sweet-like and sugary and somewhat sticky. The tree had been shaped and pruned last fall. I did notice this last year but very little of it. Made fruit and was very good but it looked like the tree just gave every last ounce to do this. Is this tree firewood at this point? The plums are really good from this tree.

Oh contraire, do not give up so easily. It sounds like a case of plum aphids, which secrete a sticky substance called honeydew. Here is more information: https://www.gardeningknowhow.com/ornamental/shrubs/oleander/control-leaf-curl-plum-aphids.htm [1]
