Q.Plum brown hole at bottom

Zone San Jose CA 95124 | glynn added on June 26, 2017 | Answered

I have pictures of some of the plums from our tree that have an oval brown pocket on the bottom that is part of the skin line. It penetrates to the pit ending a 2mm slit mark at the pit, found by dissecting the fruit. No other abberations were observed in the fruit or skin and the issue is consistent in size and location on the plums found. What is it? Is it a failure at initial growth to close off the skin at the bottom that compensates with this patch?

I believe this is just a skin blemish and not any disease or pest issue.
