Plug a hole in a tree

Question

The hole was caused when a branch broke away from the tree. It had to be sawed off therefore leaving a huge hole in the tree. Is there a way we can cover the hole so rain or squirrels can’t get in?

It is no longer recommended to fill tree holes, but if you feel you must, use soft material such as expanding foam.
