You may want to get a couple perennials started, but also plant an annual this year that will grow quickly and flower. Perennials are slow getting started.
For perennial vines, there are a number of clematis vines, plus one of my favorites is trumpet honeysuckle, though it will get heavy if you don't prune it back each spring. Others are bougainvillea, jasmine, climbing hydrangea, wisteria, and passion vine. Don't forget climbing roses!
For an annual vine, try any of the tropical vines such as mandevilla, sweet pea, or morning glory.
