Plants flattened by rain

Our three Heliopsis ‘Loraine Sunshine’ plants are ~2.5 feet tall (planted this spring). After 2 heavy rains in a few days time, two of them are flattened and have not perked up on their own. Can they be gathered up and tied with string, or is there another solution? They were gorgeous, and now they are laying on the ground!

Sorry to hear about your plants. That said, the best thing you can do for them right now is nothing. Heavy rains force the plants down and the extra weight of the water gets absorbed into their leaves, which is why they may not perk up right away – the stems cannot support this weight. Once the water has been absorbed, or the sun comes out and helps to dry them, the plants will normally bounce back on their own. Trying to correct the flattened plants could actually do more harm than good.
